Who we are
The Fourth Quarter Companion is a happiness journal with an AI companion. It is based on Naseer Rana's book Fourth Quarter Mindset.
In this policy, "we" means the Fourth Quarter Companion program. It is run by Boosting Hope, Inc., a US charity, with its technology partner Zaibex LLC.
- Boosting Hope owns the program data, including yours. It decides how it is used.
- Zaibex builds and runs the program. It handles your data only for Boosting Hope, and only to run and support the program.
The pilot is by invitation only.
The short version
- Only you can read what you write and your chats with the AI companion.
- Naseer Rana sees your name, email and how often you take part. He can also read your weekly notes and your report, unless you switch that off in Settings. Your shared report shows average happiness scores, never your words. He never sees what you write in your journal or your chats.
- An AI companion reads your notes to help you. It is always labelled as AI.
- The AI services do not use your words to train their AI.
- Your data is kept on US servers and is protected with encryption.
- Your data is never sold, never used for ads, and never used for anything else.
- You can download or delete your data at any time.
- This is a journal. It is not medical or counselling care.
What we collect
We collect only what the journal needs:
- About you: your name and email address.
- Your settings: your time zone and the time you want your daily email.
- Your journal: the notes you write, by email or on the website.
- Your voice notes, if you choose to speak instead of type. (See "Voice notes" below.)
- Your ratings: how happy you felt (1 to 5) and how long the feeling lasted.
- Your tags, if you add them (for example "Family" or "Nature").
- Your day 1 answers: your happiest moments in your life, in the last month and in the last week.
- Your sealed guess: "What will make me happiest?" It stays hidden until your reveal.
- Your photos, only if you choose to add them to your memory necklace.
- Your feedback: your answers to the feedback form and the follow-up question, if you choose to answer.
We also keep the things the program makes for you, such as your weekly notes, your report, your happiness plan and your draft Happiness Framework.
We keep a few simple records so the program works. For example: when you joined, which emails we sent you, and how much you used the AI companion.
What we do not ask for
- We do not ask about your money or your health.
- We do not ask for passwords. You sign in with a code sent to your email.
- We do not ask for payment.
Please only write what you are comfortable keeping in your journal.
How we use your information
We use it only to run the journal for you:
- to send your daily email at the time you chose
- to save your notes and ratings
- to send your weekly "what we noticed" email and your halfway note
- to make your memory necklace, your report, your happiness plan and your draft Happiness Framework
- to answer your "Ask the book" questions
- to show help lines if a note sounds like a crisis
- to fix problems
- to learn how well the pilot worked (see "Feedback" below)
We never sell your data. We never use it for advertising. We never use it for any other program, product or client.
Who can see your information
You
Only you can read your notes, your day-by-day happiness scores, your photos and your chats with the AI companion.
Naseer Rana and Boosting Hope
During the pilot, Naseer can see:
- your name and email address
- the date you joined
- how many days you wrote this week
- a simple status, such as "Writing", "Needs a nudge" or "Reveal done"
This lets him send you a friendly reminder.
He also sees totals for the whole group. For example: how many readers joined and how many wrote this week.
Naseer can also read your weekly notes and your two-month report. This is on from the start. You can switch it off at any time in Settings, under "Share my reports with Naseer", and he then sees only that you are taking part.
Naseer and Boosting Hope never see what you write in your journal, your day-by-day happiness scores, your photos or your chats with the AI companion.
[AFTER THE PILOT: confirm what Naseer sees if the program continues. Suggested: totals only, no names.]
Zaibex, our technology partner
A small number of people at Zaibex can reach the data. They look at it only when they need to fix a problem that you or Boosting Hope report.
The services that run the program
We use a few trusted outside services to run the journal. They handle your data only to provide their service. (See "The services we use" below.)
No one else
We do not share your information with anyone else, unless the law requires it.
About our emails
Our emails come in Naseer Rana's name. But Naseer does not write each email himself, and he does not read your replies. Your replies go into your private journal.
Any part of an email written by the AI companion is clearly marked as written by AI. The AI companion never pretends to be Naseer.
Replying by email: this is easy, and you do not need to sign in. But your reply also passes through your own email service, and a copy stays in your own email account. If you want more privacy, write on the website instead.
The AI companion
The AI companion reads your notes so it can:
- ask you one gentle "why?" question
- write your weekly "what we noticed" note
- find patterns and write your report, your happiness plan and your draft Happiness Framework
- answer your "Ask the book" questions, using only Naseer's book and materials he has approved
Some important points:
- The AI is always labelled as AI. It never pretends to be Naseer.
- It does not give medical, money or legal advice.
- It can make mistakes. Please use your own judgment.
- The AI companion is provided by OpenAI.
- No training on your words. We use the AI services through their business services. These do not use your words to train their AI.
- The AI services may keep data for a short time for safety checks, under their standard terms. Then they delete it.
Boosting Hope can switch the AI off. If it does, the basic journal keeps working. Voice notes, the "why?" question, the written plan and Framework, and "Ask the book" pause until it is back on.
Voice notes
If you speak instead of type, OpenAI turns your voice note into text. We then delete the recording. We keep only the text.
Talking with your companion
If you choose Talk to your companion, you have a spoken conversation with the AI companion. OpenAI runs the conversation live. The audio is not recorded or stored, by us or by OpenAI. We keep the written words of the call in your chat history, like a typed chat, so your companion remembers it. If you agree to save a happy moment during a call, it goes into your journal like any other entry. A call lasts up to 10 minutes.
The services we use
| Service | What it does for us |
|---|---|
| Vercel | Runs the website |
| Supabase | Stores the data and handles sign-in |
| Resend | Sends and receives our emails |
| OpenAI | The AI companion, finding the right parts of the book, and turning voice notes into text |
Boosting Hope must approve any change to these services. A new AI service needs Boosting Hope's written approval.
Where your data is kept and how we protect it
- Your data is stored on servers in the United States. This is true even if you live in another country.
- It is encrypted (scrambled so others cannot read it) while it travels and while it is stored.
- Only people who need it can reach it.
- You sign in with a one-time code sent to your email. There is no password to steal.
We use only the small files (cookies) needed to keep you signed in. We do not use advertising cookies.
No system is perfectly safe. But we take care to protect your data.
How long we keep your data
We keep your data while you use the journal. Our Data Retention and Deletion Policy gives the full details. In short:
- You can delete your data at any time.
- Deleted data is removed from the program at once, and from backups within 30 days.
- If you do not use your account for 12 months, we email you a reminder. Then we delete the account.
Your choices
- Download your data. Use the Download button in Settings. You get your journal, your report and your chats with the companion.
- See or clear the companion's memory. In Settings, under What your companion remembers, you can read the companion's short notes about you and make it forget your chats so far.
- Delete your data. Use the Delete button in Settings. This cannot be undone, so you may want to download first.
- Skip anything. You can skip any question. Voice notes, photos and "Ask the book" are optional.
- Stop at any time. Delete your account in Settings, or email us and we will stop your emails.
- Ask a question or ask for a correction. Email us at the address below.
Feedback
At the end of the eight weeks, we will ask you to fill in a short feedback form. About two weeks after your report, we will send you one short question. Both are optional.
If you agree, someone may also contact you for an optional 15-minute call. [WHO MAKES THE CALL: Naseer Rana, Zaibex, or both]
We use your answers to learn how well the pilot worked. Boosting Hope sees combined results.
[CONFIRM: whether Boosting Hope sees feedback answers with names. Suggested: combined numbers only, plus short quotes from written answers with no names.]
If something goes wrong
If anyone gets into readers' data without permission, Zaibex will tell Boosting Hope within 48 hours. Zaibex will help Boosting Hope tell you.
If the program does not continue after the pilot
Boosting Hope will decide whether to keep the program after the pilot. If it does not:
- We will email you at least 7 days before we switch it off.
- You can download your journal and report during that time.
- Then we switch the program off and delete all readers' data within 10 business days.
If Boosting Hope keeps the program, your data moves with it to accounts in Boosting Hope's name. This policy still applies.
This is not medical care
The Companion is a journal to help you reflect. It is not medical, psychological, counselling or emergency care.
No one reads your journal in real time. If a note sounds like a crisis, the journal shows help lines and suggests you talk to someone.
If you are in danger or thinking about hurting yourself, please get help now:
- In the US, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline).
- Or call your local emergency number (911 in the US).
Changes to this policy
Boosting Hope must approve any change to this policy.
[CONFIRM: how readers are told about changes. Suggested: "If we make an important change, we will email you before it applies."]
