A woman with silver hair sits on a wooden dock at dawn, holding a warm mug and looking out over a calm mountain lake

A happiness journal with an AI companion

Find out what really makes you happy.

One small happy moment a day. A companion to talk it over with. After eight weeks, the reveal: what truly lifts you, in your own words.

  • 1–2 minutes a day
  • No app, no passwords
  • No streaks, no guilt
  • Private by design

The idea

Don’t ask people what makes them happy. Help them find out.

Chapter 11 of Fourth Quarter Mindset asks you to keep a happiness journal for two months, then look for the patterns. Almost nobody manages it on paper. The Companion does it with you, one short note at a time, and finds the patterns for you.

Naseer Rana, painted in soft gouache: a warm smile, glasses, pines and a calm lake behind him

From the author

Naseer wrote the book. Then he built this, so you don’t have to do it on paper.

Naseer Rana is a systems engineer by training who spent much of his career at the World Bank. In the fourth quarter of his own life he did what engineers do: he looked for the pattern. What actually made his days good? He kept the notes, found the answers, and wrote Fourth Quarter Mindset.

The Companion is Chapter 11 of that book, made easy. He is with you from day one: a short welcome, his own happiness list as an example, and an AI companion that answers from his book, chapter and verse.

“The Joy is in the Journey. Live Well!”

How it works

Eight weeks. Four small habits.

  1. An opened envelope with a terracotta wax seal next to a handwritten note and a cup of tea01

    About 15 minutes, once

    Day one: your sealed guess

Watch Naseer's short welcome, tell your companion about your happiest moments, and write one guess: "What will make me happiest?" It stays sealed until the end.

  2. A grandfather and his granddaughter baking bread together, both laughing02

    1 to 2 minutes a day

    Every day: one happy moment

An email arrives at the time you choose. Reply with a line about a moment that made you happy, or tell your companion, by typing or by speaking. Say how happy it made you, and how long it lasted.

  3. Two old friends walking along a lakeside path in golden evening light03

    2 minutes a week

    Every week: what we noticed

A short, warm note on the patterns in your week. Your best moment becomes a bead on your memory necklace. Add a photo if you like.

  4. A man in a straw hat kneeling in his garden, holding a ripe tomato up to the light04

    10 to 15 minutes, once

    Day 57: the reveal

Your sealed guess opens next to what really happened. See the people, places and activities that lifted you most, and get a personal happiness plan written from the book.

See a whole journey, day by dayWorks with the AI switched off, too.

Fifty-six days

Miss a day. Miss a week. It still works.

Real life has quiet days. The patterns show through anyway. There are no streaks to keep and nothing to catch up on. If you go quiet, you get one gentle note, and that is all.

Your AI companion

Someone to tell. Every day.

Type, or just talk. Your companion listens, asks one gentle question, and offers to save the moment to your journal. Ask it anything about Naseer’s book and it answers from the book, and tells you which chapter.

  • Always labelled as AI. It never pretends to be Naseer.
  • Answers book questions only from the book, and says so when the book does not cover it.
  • Speak instead of typing. Your voice note becomes text, then the recording is deleted.
  • No medical, money or legal advice. Help lines appear at once if something sounds like a crisis.
More about your companion

The reveal

Your guess, next to the truth.

On day one you seal a guess: what will make me happiest? On day 57 it opens beside what really happened. Most people are surprised, in a good way.

  • The people, places and activities that lifted you most
  • Which moments felt biggest, and which lasted longest
  • What your low days had in common
  • A personal happiness plan, and a draft Happiness Framework in Naseer's format

Print it, or save it as a PDF to keep.

Your reveal · Day 57

The people you love, and quiet time by the water, lifted you more than anything else these two months.

Your sealed guess, day 1

“Gardening, my grandchildren, and quiet Sundays.”

What really happened

Your grandchildren were right at the top. But it was walks by the lake with Ann that showed up most often and lasted longest. Gardening appeared less than you expected.

  • Quiet mornings5
A necklace of eight painted beads on a terracotta thread, each bead showing a small scene: a lake, bread, a tomato, a telephone, a flower, a dog, a candle and a book

The memory necklace

One bead a week. Eight good memories.

Each week your best moment becomes a bead, an image from Chapter 9 of the book. Add a photo if you like. By the end you have a string of the moments worth keeping.

From the book

Four ideas, straight from Fourth Quarter Mindset.

  • Chapter 11

    The happiness journal

Write down what makes you happy for two months, then look for the patterns. The Companion does it with you.

  • Chapter 13

    The Three Ws

Well-being, Wealth and Worth. Your plan at the end is sorted by them.

  • Chapter 12

    The Happiness Index

Happiness = Reality ÷ Expectations. Why some days feel better than they look.

  • Chapter 9

    The memory necklace

A string of the moments worth keeping. One bead a week.

Questions

Things people ask first.

All questions and answers
What is The Fourth Quarter Companion?

It is a two-month happiness journal with an AI companion. Every day you note one moment that made you happy. Every week you get a short note on what we noticed. After eight weeks you get your reveal: a private report on what really makes you happy, and a simple plan to enjoy more of it. It is based on Chapter 11 of Fourth Quarter Mindset by Naseer Rana.

Who is it for?

People in the fourth quarter of life, roughly 55 and up, who want more good days. You do not need to be good with computers. If you can reply to an email, you can do this.

Do I need to have read the book?

No. The journal explains everything it needs as you go. If you want to go deeper, your AI companion can answer questions from the book and tell you which chapter it comes from.

How much time does it take?

Day one takes about 15 minutes. After that, one or two minutes a day. Reading your weekly note takes about two minutes. Your reveal at the end takes ten to fifteen minutes to read.

What if I miss a day?

That is fine. There are no streaks, no badges and no guilt. If you go quiet for a while you get one gentle note that says pick up where you left off.

Do I need an app or a password?

No app and no password. You can reply to the daily email, or open the website on any phone, tablet or computer. To sign in, we email you a 6-number code.
